Welcome to the SFTC Academy

Our team is excited to be working in the East San Fernando Valley community. We are committed to creating socio-economic opportunities while we are building the new light rail, and SFTC Careers Academy is part of that commitment. SFTC Careers Academy has been created to provide professional development opportunities to the project community as related to the Architecture/Engineering/Construction industry. We invite you to participate in our training programs offered during construction of the project so that you can learn about the project and our team, the professional careers in the AEC industry and to develop new technical and soft skills needed to succeed in the industry jobs.

SFTC Careers Academy Programs

We offer four programs to develop your professional skills. Three programs focus on technical skills, and they are Administration in Construction, Field Engineering (non-professional engineer), and Office Engineering (non-professional engineer). These programs are an exciting opportunity to explore various professional jobs in the industry, which are also entry points into long-term careers. In addition, the programs are facilitated by subject matter experts from our team and it is a unique opportunity to network with our team and hiring managers. As part of the Academy, we are also offering soft skills training, and those skills are essential to be successful in any profession, and include communication, ability to work on a team, critical thinking and more. The soft skills training is highly interactive and facilitated by experienced trainers. All programs are open to anyone who is interested in exploring careers in the industry and the only prerequisite is curiosity to learn.

Administration in Construction Program

September 2025

This program is an introductory program to professional careers in the industry, which are opportunities to enter the industry whether you are transitioning from another field of work or just starting your professional career. In this program, you will explore a variety of careers, for example, document control, administration, accounting, and more. All classes are facilitated by managers from our team, and focus on practical knowledge and skills.

Soft Skills Program

September 2025

This program focuses on non-technical skills that are essential to success in all jobs/careers. This program will be offered throughout the duration of the project and will focus on a variety of soft skills. The topics include effective communication, working on a team, analytical skills, time management, emotional intelligence, and more. We encourage you to participate in those programs regardless of your career type, as soft skills are essential across industries and job levels. This is a program to further your professional growth and set you for success.

Office Engineering Program

October 2025

If you are interested in project controls, and managing the back office support of project delivery, this pathway is for you. Office Engineer (non-professional meaning not requiring an engineering degree) supports various aspects of project delivery including budgets, scheduling, estimating, subcontractors and more. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys construction but prefers to work with the office team.

Field Engineering Program

October 2025

If you are interested in working both in the office and on the construction site (in the field), this program is for you. A Field Engineer (non-professional engineer meaning not requiring an engineering degree) splits their time between managing work in the field and collaborating with laborers, superintendents, etc., and office responsibilities, which may include reporting on field activity, usage of materials, and more. This pathway is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and is able to transition between office and the field teams.
